Adrian and Peter Van Walenburch [ Adriaan De Walenburch et Pieter De Walenburch] Methodus Augustiniana Defendendi & Probandi Fidem Catholicam Ex Solo Verbo Dei Coloniae Apud Wilhelmum Friessem 1647 Hard Cover Fine Hard Cover Altera editio, auctior & emendatior. 295 p., 16 cm. introduction, index, and particularly interesting catalogue of bibles published up to that time and books published by Catholic authors and Lutheran authors. Contemporary binding with gilt decoration on front and back cover; gilt edges; some tear to pages 287-289; light rubbing to boards; very occasional underlining. Frontispiece; titlepage. Adrian van Walenburch (1609-1669) and Peter van Walenburch (1610-1675) were auxiliary bishops of Cologne and celebrated, but controversial, theologians. It is uncertain if they were Catholic or Protestant in their youth, but became voluminous writers noted for their learning and their controversy with Protestants. Their writing is noted for its clarity. There is some dispute as to whom was the principal writer since they usually published together. Their collected works were issued in two volumes folio in Cologne in 1669. "Methodus augustiniana....." became quite a controversial work and was for some time frowned upon by the Catholic Church. This is a fine copy of this rare work. Price:
