Ampelius, Lucius and Florus, Lucius Annaeus [ Carolus Andreas Dukerus ] L. Annaei Flori Epitome Rerum Romanarum Cum Integris Salmasii, Freinshemii, Graevii, et Selectis Aliorum Animadversionibus. Recensuit, Usasque Adnotationes Addidt Carolus Andreas Dukerus, Bound with Lucius Ampelius Ex Bibliotheca Cl. Salmasii (2 Vol.) Leiden Lugduni Bataborum [Leiden], Apud Johannem Vander Linder 1722 First Edition Very Good pp.960, index, engraved frontispiece, fold-out engraved map of the Roman Empire and fold-out engraving of the Triumphs of the Roman Empire. Florus was a 2nd century A.D. Roman historian and poet. He is best remembered for telling Emperor Hadrian "I do not wish to be a Caesar" and for the Emperor to reply "I do not wish to be a Florus". This is Florus' seminal work on the history of the Roman people. This edition is the first edition of Duker's "variorum" of Florus's work, a monumental work which was still greatly admired in recent times. Duker has added an index of comparison with other authors and a chronoligical table, as well as notes. TOGETHER WITH Lucius Ampelius's Ex Bibliotheca (pp. 52). Ampelius was possibly a tutor or schoolmaster, as well as a well-respected historian from the earliest times to the reign of Trajan. Blind stamp decoration on spine; raised bands; gilt; two volumes. Full leather. Title in red and black. Small portion of frontispiece coming away in part from text. Rubbed and occasional spots (one glass ring) on boards. With ex libris of Watson's (Aberdeen) Library on free endpaper. Red ink spot on top edge of a few pages in Tome I. Both fold-out engravings in fine condition. Hinges a bit tender. Small crack on spine of Tome II. Very good copies of important works on Roman history. Price:
