Colonel J. C. B. Statham With My Wife Across Africa By Canoe and Caravan London Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent First Edition Original Decorative Cloth Good Undated but probably 1924. First edition in original green decorative cloth. Explorers canoing in gilt decoration on front cover. The author knew Africa from previous hunting trips. His wife suggested that for their wedding trip they cross Africa. They decided to make the crossing from Mossamedes to the Kubango river, and down it and the Zambezi river system to the Indian Ocean. This part of the trip had never been done by white people and there were very few accounts of the region. So this was to be a wedding trip, a hunting trip and an exploratory trip of a life time. The trip was in fact not completed as originally thought out because of unforeseen dangers from the hippopotami and crocodiles (very well recounted in the book). Cover is faded and a bit worn. Inside spine a bit cracked and one page is loose. Previous owner's name on free endpaper. Detailed appendices of the peoples, animals and plants . A wonderful book of adventures well recounted, with 3 maps and 55 illustrations by way of black and white photographs. Price:
25.00 GBP
