Irving has selected ten mountains with some difficulty. He had to restrict the number of Alpine peaks to two (Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn) and had to leave out some Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi. At the time of writing of course, Everest had not yet been conquered; there is a description of the attempts to that date. Very well written with superb photographs and diagrams.
