This is an autobiographical travel book. The author spent some time travelling through France just before the outbreak of the Second World War. He spent most of his travels in Provence and gives wonderful insight and anecdotes about Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Orange and many more wonderful places on the Cote D'Azur. There is much about food, art, architecture and also bullfighting as it was practiced in the South of France at the time (with a photograph). The book is illustrated with the author's black and white photographs of a France which is no longer quite the same.
