The author was writing a book on the second world war in Russia but decided to publish this book on Leningrad even before it was liberated and while he was still there. Leningrad held a peculiar place in the Second World War and this book is a very good first-hand account of the war in Leningrad. The author was the only British correspondent to have been in Leningrad during the blockade (he was also born in that city). With illustrations.
