Greene had gone to Belgian Congo in January 1959 with this new novel already beginning to form in his head. One of the novels he had the most difficulty to pen down, but some find it one of his very best. Page 25 partly detached; edge wear to dustjacket, rubbing and some small tear (see picture); dustjacket previously repaired with sello tape on inside.
